Would It Ever End? Rebuilding My Health After a Month of Illness; recovery from illness, immune system support, gut health, reflexology and aromatherapy

There was a point where I genuinely started asking myself: would this ever end? This is the reason I missed January's blog.

It began (in December) with tonsillitis. Then an ear infection. Then a perforated eardrum. Just as I thought I was turning a corner, along came a viral sore throat and cough. The coughing was so intense it actually put my back out, leaving me immobile for weeks. And just when I thought my body had surely had enough… a gum infection joined the party.

One illness after another, over more than a month, each one chipping away not just at my physical health—but my mood, my motivation, and my sense of myself.

My immune system was clearly at rock bottom. Every bug that passed by seemed to take a shot… and win.

As the weeks went on, movement disappeared from my life. Exercise wasn’t just difficult—it was impossible. Even basic self-care began to feel like too much effort. My body was stiff, my mind was cloudy, and emotionally I felt low and frustrated.

And then there were the antibiotics. Necessary, absolutely—but after several rounds, it was obvious they had taken their toll. While they were clearing the infections, they were also wiping out the good bacteria my body relies on to function well.

I felt disconnected from myself. Stuck. Drained. Low. recovery from illness immune system support gut health reflexology aromatherapy

Choosing Support Instead of “Pushing Through”

Instead of forcing myself to bounce back quickly (something I’ve learned the hard way doesn’t work), I chose a gentler route.

I stayed away from work, I booked an extra treatment with my reflexologist—simply because my body needed support, not pressure. That session became a turning point.

Not a miracle cure, but a reminder that healing doesn’t have to be aggressive to be effective.

From there, I focused on rebuilding, not rushing.

Leaning Into Aromatherapy When Options Were Limited

As a trained essential oils practitioner, I also leaned into the knowledge and tools I already had.

Because of allergies, anti-inflammatory medications aren’t an option for me. That could have felt limiting—but instead, it became an invitation to work more holistically. I used essential oils intentionally to help boost my mood, reduce pain and inflammation, and support my body through discomfort when conventional options weren’t available.

Aromatherapy became another layer of care—gentle but powerful. A reminder that there is always a way to support the body, even when the path isn’t the most obvious one.

Starting from the Inside: Gut Health After Antibiotics

When the illnesses started to properly fade, The first place I began was my gut.

After antibiotics, gut health is often overlooked—but it’s foundational. Digestion, immunity, energy, mood… it all starts there. Slowly reintroducing foods and habits that support the gut felt like laying new foundations rather than patching cracks.

As my reflexologist said to me "eat the rainbow", we need all the colours for health and interestingly, stay away from salads / cold foods in the Winter, obvious, maybe but staying away from raw, cold salads in the winter is often advised to align your diet with the body’s need for warmth, better digestion, and the consumption of seasonal produce. In colder months, consuming raw, chilled foods can feel unappealing and may cause discomfort, as the body works harder to bring them to core temperature.

It was a quiet but powerful shift.

Bringing Movement Back to a Stiff Body

After weeks of being unwell and immobile, my body felt foreign—tight, achy, and hesitant.

I didn’t jump straight back into exercise. I started with gentle stretching, small movements, listening carefully to what my body could manage that day. Some days it was five minutes. Some days it was just breathing and rolling my shoulders.

And that was enough. It's still now slow progress but going in the right direction.

Movement became less about fitness and more about reconnecting with my body again.

Clearing a Cloudy Mind with Meditation

Illness doesn’t just live in the body—it fogs the mind too.

Meditation helped me slow everything down. It gave me space to notice how I was actually feeling instead of pushing it aside. Even a few minutes a day helped calm my nervous system and bring clarity back when my thoughts felt scattered and heavy.

What This Experience Taught Me

If there’s one thing this month taught me, it’s this:

Healing is not linear, and it’s not a race.

Sometimes self-care looks like rest. Sometimes it looks like asking for help. Sometimes, a cry to release. Sometimes it looks like starting again from the very basics—gut health, gentle movement, breath, stillness, and supportive therapies like reflexology and aromatherapy.

And sometimes, it looks like admitting that things are hard… and choosing kindness anyway.

If You’re Reading This in the Middle of It

If your immune system feels low, your body feels unfamiliar, or you’re frustrated that healing is taking longer than you expected—please know this: you are not weak, and you are not doing anything wrong.

Start where you are. Choose one small thing that supports you today, whether that’s rest, movement, nourishment, breath, or asking for help.

There is always a way forward, even if it’s slower than you hoped Slow, supported healing still counts.
